Sweden is a Scandinavian nation with thousands of coastal islands and inland lakes, along with vast boreal forests and glaciated mountains. Its principal cities, eastern capital Stockholm and southwestern Gothenburg and Malmö, are all coastal. Stockholm is built on 14 islands. It has more than 50 bridges, as well as the medieval old town, Gamla Stan, royal palaces and museums such as open-air Skansen.

Higher Education System

In Sweden there are 14 public universities and 21 public university colleges as well as a number of independent institutions of higher education. The Swedish higher education institutions have a degree structure that conforms to the Bologna Process; a Europe-wide standardization drive for higher education. There are three levels of higher education, each with minimum requirements for entry: a first level (Undergraduate studies), second level (Master's studies) and third level (Licentiate and PhD degrees).

Lund University

Lund University is one of the oldest and most prestigious universities in Northern Europe, and ranks 73rd in the world. With a large student body of 41,000, students make up almost half the population of the city of Lund (click on the ‘Student Cities’ tab to find out more), 15% of which are from outside Sweden. The university cooperates with 600 universities in over 70 countries, both in research and in student exchange programs such as Erasmus.

KTH, Royal Institute of Technology

KTH is Sweden’s largest, oldest and most international polytechnic university and considered one of the best in Europe. Located in the capital, Stockholm, it currently ranks 97th in the world, provides a third of Sweden’s research and engineering education, and has consistently ranked as one of the top 40 universities for engineering and technology subjects.

Uppsala University

Founded in 1477, Uppsala University is the oldest university in both Sweden and all of the Nordic countries. It ranks joint 98th in the QS World University Rankings 2016-2017 and has 41,470 students enrolled. The university’s long history of prestigious education makes it a member of the Coimbra Group, an association of longstanding institutions of a high international standard.

Chalmers University of Technology

Located in Gothenburg, Chalmers University of Technology is another very strong polytechnic university, ranked 139th in the world overall and within the top 100 for engineering and technology subjects. Over a third of students enrolled on master’s programs at Chalmers are international, which may be partly due to the fact that all master’s courses are taught in English.

Stockholm University

Stockholm University is the Swedish capital’s state university, currently ranked joint 196th in the world. It’s one of Scandinavia’s largest universities, educating nearly 70,000 students in four faculties. Stockholm University offers many programs in English and is currently ranked within the top 100 universities in the world for arts and humanities.
